I'm not pretty sure, DFU is supposed to be an standard, used primarily to flash BIOS-like things for linux machines. It's even present in some other devices like webcams.

It's hard to say if it's the most "general" thing. IMHO both don't hurt and can co-exist, thus ensuring a correct DFU mode exit and board reset.
