You have the behavior I expected :) It is not specific to the nucleo. The problem is just finally shown by this test. It needs to be solved for this PR.

When you do `RIOT_TERMINAL=picocom make all test -C tests/test_tools/` it is with `native` so not using `RIOT_TERMINAL`, that is why it "works" with native.

The issue is with `picocom` and a board as `picocom` is configured to do local echo. The echo is different from `pyterm` readline showing the characters when run from the shell, and they are caught by `pexpect`.
So the problem is the `picocom` configuration. Or at least, its configuration when used as a test terminal.

With @jcarrano we are thinking about having maybe two different modes for `make term` one for a user in the command line, and one for the test.
It could either be a configuration variable or a different target like `make rawterm`.
It would also disable the `timestamps` printed by `pyterm` for example.
