if I understand correctly without the `TIM_FLAG_RESET_ON_MATCH` then only the first interrupt will happen after the desired time, all subsequent ISR will be after a full timer cycle right?

On the other side with or without `TIM_FLAG_RESET_ON_MATCH` `timer_read` doesn't need to change IMO, what maybe should be documented is that this would conflict with the operation of a high level timer interface right?
