@JannesVolkens I'm happy you got it working! :D 

Is it a plain cable you are using? With noting else attached or in between? Have you measured the pins with a multimeter? Do they all arrive where you expect them to? 

I have also used similar CAN-cables with DB-9 connectors in the past (in fact, the board for which I initially wrote the driver only had this type of interface), but everything worked out of the box. So I'm guessing there's something wrong with your hardware. 

Not sure if it's relevant, but when we first tried to get CAN working on this board (with a different driver) it took us ages to figure out what was wrong. Turns out, the designer had used a female footprint instead of a male one on the PCB. This resulted in the connections being mirrored. I don't think it's relevant to your problem, but I guess it won't hurt checking :)
