Yeah, you are right. We should still come up with a good proposal to integrate the new API into our networking system. After talking to @jia200x  and based on your and @benpicco's comments it seems there is consensus about the asynchronous API (I'm fine with it too) which leaves us the following options:

(i) Process event in ISR, probably only on memory mapped radios.
(ii) Extra thread for "BH processor".
(iii) Double mutex in one thread as proposed by @maribu [before](https://github.com/RIOT-OS/RIOT/pull/13943#issuecomment-630745317)

Some more thoughts on (i) would be great. For GNRC, I personally prefer (ii). We could optimize thread stack sizes, not to exceed memory requirements, and #13762 can reduce the need for one whole thread in future. (iii) is a nice example on how to implement a single-thread solution.
