Other than for show, is this ever a good idea?

If an underlying layer can provide relevant security, it should really be able to provide some authentication, and then *that* should be used to authorize shell access. (Conversely, if there is no authentication at all but just opportunistic encryption, mitigation of MitM attacks gets tricky).
